What is a giclee print?

A giclee (pronounced “zhee-clay”) print is a fancy way of saying high-quality digital reproduction. It’s not ‘fine art’, however, it’s not your average digital print either.

“Giclee” is based on the French word gicleur, a technical term for jet or a nozzle. Hence, “ink-jet” printer. But not all printers are created equal. Rather than the common four colour CMYK printers, this high-end printer typically uses twelve pigment-based ink cartridges, resulting in a wider colour range and a more accurate colour reproduction.

Giclee prints are always high-resolution (minimum of 300 dpi), and both the paper and ink quality is archival. Archival materials are acid-free and have a lifespan of more than 100 years.
